2024 - Igniting The Church's Love for Preaching
“For ‘Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:13-14).
The questions proposed in the passage above are both timeless and urgent. The salvation of mankind has been the purpose of God’s work since before the beginning of time. He lovingly situated the information necessary for reconciliation in the story of Scripture. He then called, entrusted, and empowered His people to tell that story to all who would listen. From the mouth of caves, the tops of mountains, the corners of streets, behind lecterns, in living rooms, and over back fences, the saving message of Jesus Christ has been shared throughout the centuries.
However, we have a crisis on our hands. One we cannot ignore. One we must not overlook. Many pulpits are empty. Churches are searching for preachers and are unable to find them. Every year in our nation we lose more preachers to death, retirement, and discouragement than we can replace. There is a void that needs to be filled. There is a need that must be met. We need men fit, trained, and desirous of ministry.
One way to spark this desire is to get the church excited about preaching. Thus, we have determined to create this spark in this year’s lectureship. Do you love preaching? Do you love preachers? If not, we pray that this year’s study will ignite your love for preaching. Furthermore, we pray that your love for preaching will inspire others to want to, "Preach the word!"
